2008 Outdoor Events Calendar* Please note: All activities have a minimum number of participants needed to be run. In the event an activity is canceled due to low enrollment or extemely inclement weather, all fees will be refunded. May, 2008Mother's Day Special: Sunday, May 11 - Bring Mom out for a day of rafting and if she's accompanied by at least two other family members paying the regular rate, she is our guest for the day. As an added treat, when she arrives at the takeout at St. Helena, we will present her with a bouquet of flowers. See more information under rafting site #1, Letchworth State Park. Balloon Rally Dinner Trip: Saturday, May 24 (5:00PM) (* Please Note - this is a rafting trip through the gorge in the park. We are not riding in the balloons. Also, the balloons' direction of travel depends entirely on the prevailing winds. There is no guarantee the balloons will drop into the canyon, but they usually do.) On the weekend of May 23 - 25 more than a dozen hot air balloons will
gather for the annual Red, White, & Blue Balloon Rally in the park.
They launch from the Archery Field overlook each morning and evening
and it is truly a sight to behold. Hundreds of people will clamor for
a choice viewing spot up above, but only a select few will get the rare
view we offer as each balloon drops into the gorge to see which pilot
can get closest to the water before ascending out of the canyon. We will
travel the river to the beach directly under the overlook and then stop
for a delicious picnic supper. You'll enjoy spectacular views and a delicious
gourmet meal at the same time. This certainly will be an evening to remember! Mom and Me Overnight Retreat: May 31 thru June 01
- Being a single mother raising your kids solo can sap your strength
and
spirit.
This program
was designed specifically with that in mind. Besides all the neat outdoorsy
stuff you'll spend most of the weekend doing (like rafting, tent-camping,
cooking s'mores around the campfire, etc.), mom will find some refreshment
for her soul on Saturday evening. While our staff facilitates some team-building
games for the kids, the moms will get to hear a special guest speaker.
On Sunday morning there will be an outdoor worship service for everyone
at one of the most beautiful parts of the park, Inspiration Point. Meet
at the rafting office in Letchworth State Park at 10:00AM. Private and Semi-private lessons are also available. Whether you're interested in paddling on flat water or braving the rapids, we have a program for you. Call or email us for more information. Top of PageJune, 2008Raftin/Ridin' Roundup: Sunday, June 8 (10:30) - What
better way to spend the day than to see the park from two distinctive
viewpoints. In the morning you'll go on a guide led horseback trail ride
in one of the more remote areas within the park and in the afternoon
you will be paddling through the deepest section of the gorge. In between,
you'll be treated to a delicious chicken barbecue prepared especially
for the group. This trip will fill quickly so be sure to get your reservation
in early. Meet at the Wolcott Farms Site Office, near Trailside Lodge,
Letchworth State Park. Hemlock
Lake Interpretive Canoe Trip: Saturday, June 14, (7:00 PM) -
Join us for a relaxed and informative paddle along the shores of Hemlock
Lake.
Jim
and Sarah
Kersting,
members
of
the Finger Lakes Land Trust, will be accompanying the trip and offer
insight on the history of the Finger Lakes, flora and fauna, as well
as current and future watershed use. The evening will conclude with dessert
and coffee. Look for our truck and canoe trailer at the North end of
the lake. Essentials of River Kayaking Clinic: Saturday, June
14 Father's Day Special: Sunday, June 15 - Now it's Dad's turn to be treated to rafting. The same deal as Mother's Day applies. Since we weren't sure what his reaction to flowers would be, upon returning to the rafting office after the trip, Dad is given a commemorative coffee mug. See more information under rafting site #1, Letchworth State Park.
Full Moon Paddle Trip: Saturday, June 21 (8:00PM)
- Imagine the serenity of paddling the quiet waters
of Black Creek at night. There should be plenty of ambient light from
the moon to light our way and with the sounds of the night creatures
providing background music, this should be a night to remember. Churchville
Park is home to river otters, beavers, deer, several varieties of owls,
and the various indigenous insects, so there should be plenty to listen
for. The trip begins with a brief canoe lesson and then upon returning
to the launch site, coffee and dessert await. Meet at the boat launch
in Churchville Park. Essentials of River Kayaking Clinic: Saturday, June
28 Top of PageJuly, 2008Essentials of River Kayaking Clinic: July 12 August, 2008 Adirondacks Canoe/Camping Trip: August 04 thru 10
- Over the course of seven days, we will explore some of Northern NY's
most beautiful wilderness, the Saranac Lake Chain. The group will paddle
and portage (as needed) from the boat launch at the Saranac Inn to the
village of Saranac Lake. The highlight of the week will be a hike to
the top of Ampersand Mountain on Wednesday. Participants should be in
moderately good shape. Pre-trip meeting to be held on July 12 (1:00PM)
at the Visitor Center, Letchworth State Park. Limited to 10 people. Essentials of River Kayaking Clinic: August 9
Progressive Canoe Dinner: August 16 (5:00PM) - We'll
be paddling Black Creek, from the Route 19 Bridge to Churchville Park,
and enjoying a delicious five-course meal along the way. After some basic
canoe instruction, our bus will take you upstream to the launch point
for appetizers. The soup and salad courses will be served along the way
and the main course and dessert await back at the takeout. Limited to
12 people. Meet at the boat launch in Churchville Park. Adirondacks Canoe/Camping Trip: August 25 thru 29
- A trip in the Adirondacks fairly similar to the one listed in early
August,
just two days shorter.
Pre-trip meeting to be held on July 12 (1:00PM) at the Visitor Center,
Letchworth State Park. September, 2008Just A Plane Paddlin' Weekend: September 06 to 07 (1:00PM) - Spend a romantic weekend with that special someone and get some truly spectacular views of the Southern Genesee River Valley while you're at it. On Saturday, we'll canoe from Caneadea to Fillmore, taking our time to enjoy the sights along the way. Upon arriving in Fillmore, you will be shuttled back to Just A Plane Bed & Breakfast where a hot shower, special supper, and comfortable bed await. Arise the next morning to one of Audrey's home-cooked breakfasts and after you've had your fill, it's time to get a bird's eye view of the area because while Audrey was preparing breakfast, her husband Craig was getting the Piper Cub ready for takeoff. You'll fly over some of
the most beautiful countryside in Western NY and if the conditions
are right, you'll even get to fly over Letchworth
State Park! After you've had your fill of great food and fun with
us, spend the rest of your day sightseeing in the area at your leisure.
We heartily recommend spending the day in either Alleghany or Wyoming
County
and are ready with lots of suggestions for where to go and what to
do! Limited to 8 participants.
A Taste of the Finger Lakes Canoe Trip: September 28
(12:00PM) - Come spend a relaxing afternoon paddling a canoe around pristine
Hemlock Lake while sampling some of New York's finest wines and cheeses.
After a brief lesson in the basics of canoeing, we will proceed along
the northern portion of the lake, stopping every so often to try one
of the various selections that are with us. The trip concludes with some
delicious gourmet coffee and a delightful dessert waiting for everyone
upon reaching the takeout. This should be a day to remember for a long
time. Limited to 16 participants - must be 21. Top of PageOctober, 2008Halloween Canoe Trip: October 18 & 25 (7:00PM)
- Okay, so the actual holiday isn't until the
end of the month but all the really scary ghosts were booked so we had
to move the trip up. (Not really; we figured who wants to take a chance
canoeing in the snow.) We will be paddling on the treacherous BLAAAAACK
CREEEEEEEEEK! Nothing is scarier than what you can conjure up in your
imagination and since you're canoeing in the dark with almost no ambient
light, we think it'll be pretty scary!!! For those who survive, treats
will be served at the end of the journey. Meet at the boat launch in
Churchville Park. |
